✅ Check the simple stuff first
- Make sure the patient is safe — swap in a backup unit if you need to.
- Reproduce the complaint yourself and write down exactly what you see (screen, alarm, code).
- Check power, battery, cables, accessories, and settings before ordering parts.
- Then open the service manual above and follow its troubleshooting section.
🛠️ Common faults for HeartStart MRx (8)
Won't turn on / Batteries Low / Shutting Down source ↗
- Insert a fully charged battery or connect AC/DC; Batteries Low means less than 10 min of monitoring or six 200 J shocks
- Charge indicators inaccurate: calibrate the battery; short life: replace it
Poor ECG (noise or wandering baseline) or flat line with no Leads Off source ↗
- Fresh, in-date electrodes or pads with skin prep; move away from RFI sources
- Run the Operational Check with the cable, then without it; if it passes without, replace the cable, otherwise service
No Shock Delivered: Replace Pads / Press Pads Firmly / Low-High Impedance source ↗
- Low impedance: replace the pads; high impedance: press pads firmly
- Paddles: improve skin contact; replace the paddles if it persists
Slow charge to selected energy source ↗
- Running on AC/DC with no or a low battery: install a charged battery
Pacing Stopped [Leads Off] / [Pads Off] source ↗
- Reapply the electrodes or pads and check the cables, then press [Resume Pacing]
NBP Cuff Not Deflated / Interrupted / Measurement Failed; cuff won't inflate source ↗
- Remove and deflate the cuff; check cuff size, placement and tubing; replace the cuff
- Calibration is due yearly or every 10,000 cycles; end of life is 50,000 cycles
Printer: paper won't move, faint print, missing dots, grinding source ↗
- Reload the paper or clear the jam; replace wet paper; latch the door
- Clean the printhead; let it cool if hot
- Printer Malfunction: power off for 15 s; otherwise service
Operational Check failures (Charge/Shock Button, Therapy Knob, Shock Equip) source ↗
- Remove from use and call service
- Therapy Cable Failure during the check: attach a therapy cable and rerun
🔢 HeartStart MRx error codes (15)
| Code | Meaning | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Device Error. Service Required. | Failure detected at start-up | Take out of use; call service source ↗ |
| All Settings Have Been Set To Factory Default Values | Corrupt or incomplete configuration | Reload the configuration file source ↗ |
| Fan Failure | Internal fan not running | Service source ↗ |
| Internal Memory Failure | Card reformatted after a failed self-test | Ready again; prior data was erased source ↗ |
| Event Storage Full | Over capacity or the 12 h limit | Print or copy the Event Summary and start a new case source ↗ |
| Power Supply Failure INOP | Internal power supply fault | Remove from use source ↗ |
| Replace Clock Battery | Internal clock battery | Service source ↗ |
| Shock Equip Malfunction INOP | Hardware prevents a shock | Remove from use source ↗ |
| Pads ECG Cable Failure / ECG Cable Failure INOP | Lead wire shorted to ground | Replace the cable; Operational Check source ↗ |
| ECG Equip Malfunction INOP | Hardware failure | Operational Check without the cable; service if the Leads ECG test fails source ↗ |
| Pacer Equip Malfunction INOP | Pacing hardware | Service source ↗ |
| NBP Calibration Overdue / NBP Equip Malfunction / NBP Service Required | Calibration due, NBP hardware fault, or 50k cycles | Service the NBP module; don't use NBP source ↗ |
| Maximum Energy 50J | Internal paddles | Select ≤50 J source ↗ |
| R-Wave Not Detected | Sync cardioversion | Pick a lead with a clear QRS source ↗ |
| Printer Malfunction / Check Printer / Incompatible Printer | Printer fault, no paper or door open, or fonts | Power cycle 15 s; load paper; Asian fonts need the 75 mm printer source ↗ |
🧰 Common checks for Defibrillators (1)
Won't charge or deliver shock source ↗
- Isolate controls: try paddles vs. pads vs. front-panel buttons
- Check pad/paddle contact and cables (impedance disarm)
- Check battery / run on AC; slow charge often = battery
- Read stored failure codes in service mode before replacing therapy module
